How to Tell if Your Air Ducts are Undersized

Are your air ducts undersized?

Air duct lesson time! Using this duct sizing chart, we will teach you just how easy it is to tell if your air ducts are undersized, oversized, or badly installed. The HVAC experts of Jenergy Air are very experienced with air duct repairs and installations and have seen it all!

Let’s say we have a 3-ton air handler/blower. You only have room for one big return duct due to limited space. This duct has two 90° angles, and is 35′ stretched out.

  1. For every 90° angle, add 5′
  2. For every 10′ go up to the next sized flex ( 12″ to 14″).
  3. You have 1500 CFM to return back to your air handler/blower.
  4. What size air duct do I need?

Look up your air handlers model number on Google, you should be able to find the design cfm.

Our challenge to you is, post your numbers! This exercise will really help you understand exactly how much air your little air handler needs to breathe. If everyone is interested, we can talk about the effects undersized ducts can do. It’s worse than you realize!

How do you know if your ducts are undersized? Have you had an A/C company increase your system size without doing any duct modifications? Do you have an uneven temperature between rooms? This video shows one example of how undersized ductwork can affect your home comfort and hopefully, you will all get something out of watching it. Our mission is to have educated customers!

Signs of Poorly Installed Air Ducts

We have unfortunately seen tons of poorly or improperly installed air duct systems. This job was a referral from a mold restoration company, where we were supposed to just clean the air handler. Upon investigating, we found this job to be a lot bigger than expected. This is all caused because the supply duct that attached the air handler to the duct system was undersized. When you hire an AC company that really understands airflow, these kinds of problems can be avoided! Improper airflow systems can not only make you uncomfortable, but they can also make you sick!

What happens when your ducts aren’t sealed to the ceiling? Besides the obvious air leakage and an increase in your utility usage, it creates a comfy living environment for rats and roaches! We are fixing a customer’s duct system now so they can enjoy the benefits of proper cooling more than their pests!

Don’t let bad air ducts happen to you!

These are a few of the insane “fixes” we have found that actually cause more problems than you would think. Wood is not an insulating material and should never be used to conduct airflow, and a pillow was used in picture #2 to seal up a duct leak by a homeowner. Both of these methods of quick fixes could cause mold to grow inside your duct systems! We work with amazing licensed mold specialists to make sure this doesn’t happen to you. Get your ducts inspected to prevent this in your home!

Here are some ducts we removed recently that date back to the 1960s! A good duct system can make or break your comfort indoors. When upgrading your AC it’s important to have your duct system inspected. If you have these ducts in place, you’re losing a lot of cooling before it even gets through your vents! This customer loves their new system and new air ducts are part of the reason!
